Walking in Healing ~ Darlene’s journal ˙ Last w Walking in Healing ~ Darlene’s journal
˙
Last week I told you about the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). This week the para-sympathetic nervous system (PNS).
˙
If the SNS is fight or flight, PNS is rest and digest or feed and breed. The PNS is the system that is active when we are calm, safe, secure, nurtured and cared for (by others or toward ourselves). Looking at that bear analogy, if you were in the woods and saw a bear you aren’t going to sit and eat, if you tried you would likely feel sick and find it difficult to chew let alone swallow or digest that food. If you were running from a bear, you wouldn’t stop for sexy time or a nap.
˙
Together these two systems keep you safe, and let your body functions operate appropriately. So what happens to the PNS when you are under chronic stress?
It works really hard. In overdrive, really. But despite it’s efforts, it will struggle to override the SNS and all those danger messages the brain is receiving. This makes digestion difficult, elimination activities don’t run smoothly, you may experience disruptions in your menstrual cycle or sexual/reproductive functioning. Sleep may be sporadic or hard to come by at all. But the worst part is your body’s own healing systems do not operate at their optimal. Your body is an amazing healer! It can fix broken bones!! But to do it’s job properly it needs the right environment - a safe, secure, nurtured one.
˙
Next week - what you can do to help your body out.

Every March Endometriosis Month takes place across Every March Endometriosis Month takes place across the world, with the aim of increasing awareness and highlighting the symptoms of this debilitating condition that affects an estimated 176 million women worldwide.
˙
Endometriosis can have a devastating effect on the quality of life of sufferers of this condition due to the painful symptoms that the disease carries and the fact that it is the biggest cause of infertility in women. Although this is a condition that affects 1 in 10 women, the average diagnosis can take up to 7 and a half years, and with this unacceptably long diagnosis time, the main focus of the event is to raise awareness of the symptoms of Endometriosis with the goal being more women receiving diagnosis and treatment earlier.

Walking in Healing~Darlene’s journal The Sympat Walking in Healing~Darlene’s journal

The Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) is part of the autonomic system which is responsible for things that run in the body without input from you—like breathing.

The SNS cares about you, it keeps you safe and pushes you to action. It’s your fight or flight system. If you were in the woods and saw a bear your SNS would kick in and you would experience things like shallow breaths, increased heart rate, and dilated pupils. Body functions like hunger, excrements, and sex drive shut down as adrenalin pumps through your system preparing you to run or fight for your life.
˙
Amazing isn’t it? And incredibly useful when there’s a bear. So how does the SNS help us day to day?
˙
The SNS is activated from any stress event. It pushes you to action and helps you make deadlines, drive in heavy traffic, and get your kids off to their lessons, games, or training. Sounds good, right?
Unfortunately, to your body, the stress you experience from deadlines, traffic, news, and all those notifications on your phone, is just like seeing a bear. We are constantly 'running from bears’, constantly bombarded by stimuli, always reacting, and for many of us, the SNS is overactive.
˙
This is chronic stress and it means that the level of hormones like adrenalin and cortisol are often too high. High levels of these hormones can lead to health issues that range from trouble sleeping, heart disease, weight gain, inflammation, pain, anxiety and so much more.

I know stats can be boring, and last week I gave you stats, and in the coming weeks you’ll see some more. I promise there is a reason for it so please bear with me! I’m getting to a point but I’m limited in characters for these posts.
˙
I also said I was going to talk about chronic stress and I will, next week.
˙
This week, I’m back at Benchmark playing with feet again! Yay! I’m so happy about it, I truly am. But there’s a but…
˙
The but is, my anxiety was through the roof. I have chronic sinus issues and for two weeks they have been on overdrive, then last week the beautiful sun gave me a four day migraine. Pain, exhaustion, lack of sleep and now I have to go out? Outside? Where people are?
˙
By Monday I was improving, but still worn out. I rated myself a 5/10 on a support call I attended. I teared up every time someone asked me how I was feeling. I didn’t want to leave my house. My anxiety was running at full tilt and I couldn’t do a thing to stop it and I was trying all my tricks.
˙
Getting out of the house and off to work was the cure. I feel so much better now. I’m calm, relaxed and thinking straight. It was so nice to see my clients again! I met Laura for the first time (she’s lovely), had a few minutes to chat with Nas and Shannon, and the most special treat—a few minutes with Olja who I rarely get to see. These beautiful people lifted me back up doing nothing but being their beautiful selves.
˙
I had to leave my house to get home.💛 🏡
